Injury Prevention

Goal 4; Prevention

The Role of Injury Prevention for the NCRETAC

  • Focus on preventing intentional and unintentional injuries, by gathering regional data and defining targeted injuries and populations in communities in the Northeast Region.
  • Determine appropriate interventional strategies through education and targeted interactions and partnerships.
  • Maintaining a fiscally responsible injury prevention program that enhances the best interest of the facilities, EMS agencies and communities in the northeast region.

Objectives –

  • Falls are the most common mechanism of injury based on regional and state data. Increased programing and community outreach that directly impacts injuries related to falls.
    • Matter of Balance classes are evidence-based classes that helps older adults reduce their fear of falling and increases activity levels for confidence. This is a research based, data driven nationally recognized program.
    • Flashlights provided to community members to light their way at night during trips to the restroom and other locations in the home to prevent falls.
  • Motor vehicle crashes are the 2nd most common mechanism in the northeast region. Data suggests the young drivers, impaired drivers of all ages and speeding are the most common cause of serious injury and death.
    • Teen Driving Programs are scheduled across the region to educate and hopefully impact the decisions of young drivers and their families.
