About This Committee

The Health and Wellness Committee promotes and sustains the physical and behavioral health, resilience, and overall well-being of EMS and trauma care providers across the NCRETAC region. The committee coordinates peer support programming, critical incident resources, provider health screenings, and workforce resilience initiatives, recognizing that a healthy workforce is foundational to safe and effective patient care.

Peer Support

Develops and coordinates the Peer Support Academy and regional peer support programming to provide structured support for providers experiencing occupational stress, traumatic exposure, or personal crises.

Ensures access to critical incident processing resources and facilitates timely regional response following high-acuity incidents affecting EMS providers.

Wellness Trend Monitoring

Monitors trends in provider mental health and wellness and provides data-informed recommendations to the Board on programming priorities and resource needs.

Cross-Committee Coordination

Coordinates with Workforce Development & Support and Injury Prevention Committees on intersecting programming where wellness and workforce outcomes overlap.

Committee Structure

The Health and Wellness Committee meets quarterly during the first month of each quarter, prior to the NCRETAC Board meeting. Membership includes EMS professionals, behavioral health clinicians, peer support specialists, and others with relevant expertise or lived experience. A majority of active members constitutes a quorum. Decisions are made by consensus; in the event of a tie, the Chair casts the deciding vote.

Chair

A current NCRETAC Board member, appointed by the President. Leads the committee, sets the agenda, and serves as liaison to the Board. Current Chair: Brett Dowis, Logan County.

Co-Chair

A member with experience in provider wellness, behavioral health, or peer support, appointed by the Board. Supports the Chair and brings clinical or programmatic expertise to committee activities.

Members

EMS professionals, behavioral health clinicians, peer support specialists, and others with relevant expertise or lived experience. Representation from all nine counties is encouraged.

The committee charter was approved March 17, 2026 and is available in the Committee Charters and Procedures Manual. The Health and Wellness Committee was established as a standing committee in FY 2026.
