How to Talk About Suicide
The words we use matter.
Talking about suicide openly, using clear, direct language, reduces stigma and can help someone feel less alone. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention maintains evidence-based messaging guidelines for how to discuss suicide safely and effectively, including guidance for media, organizations, and individuals.
Key principles: use the phrase “died by suicide” rather than “committed suicide.” Talk about it directly. Do not avoid the word. Reaching out to someone you are worried about is almost always the right call.
