Overview

Austere Emergency Care (AEC) is an advanced, four-day training combining classroom, hands-on labs, and a full-day immersive scenario designed to prepare medical providers to manage critically ill or injured patients in resource-limited or remote settings. The curriculum integrates principles from Prolonged Field Care (PFC), Prolonged Casualty Care (PCC), and Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) guidelines, applying best practices for delivering high-level care when immediate evacuation or hospital access is not feasible.

Participants will engage in scenario-based learning, problem-solving with limited resources, and group decision-making under austere conditions. A final full-day casualty exercise (with role players/simulated patients) integrates all lessons from the week.

This offering will include two tracks (Basic / Advanced) to accommodate learners of differing experience levels, with many shared objectives and practicums.

Who Should Attend

This course is ideal for:

  • EMS professionals (EMTs, paramedics)
  • Emergency department providers (nurses, physicians)
  • Prehospital providers with responsibilities in rural, remote, or austere environments.
  • Search & rescue, wilderness medicine, disaster response, and rescue teams.
  • Others with prior clinical experience seeking to expand their capability in prolonged care settings.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with TECC / TCCC or equivalent baseline trauma care skills is strongly recommended.

Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate and may be eligible for up to 40 continuing education credits (CE) (and FAWM credit for AEC-Advanced where applicable).

Expectations & Preparation

  • Participants should arrive ready to engage in both didactic and hands-on sessions.
  • Bring your usual EMS / critical care gear (details provided in registration package).
  • Expect physically and mentally intensive training, working under realistic stress conditions.
  • Cold Weather Preparedness: December conditions in Yuma can be cold and unpredictable. Students must bring appropriate cold-weather clothing suitable for extended outdoor activity. Some sessions and the culminating scenario will take place outside for extended periods regardless of weather.
